Chhalaang is a hilarious, yet inspirational journey of Montu, a PT Master from a semi govt. funded school for whom teaching PT is just a job. When circumstances put everything he cares for at stake, including Neelu who he loves, Montu is forced to do what he’s never done- TEACH. Through his journey, the film humorously addresses the value of Sports Education in school curriculum.

Drama specialist Mehta (2012’s Shahid) brings to this a professionalism you could easily underrate. Handled carelessly, fluff like this often unravels into nonsense, but Chhalaang feels faintly precious for landing intact near the end of a heavy year.

Chhalaang, on the face of it, hits the right buttons, gender parity included, but it all seems more manufactured than organic when a man like Montu is handed a long rope and held up as a paragon of purposeful self-assertion.
Chhalaang, unable to fend off its contradictions, gets all tangled up in its own mixed messages. As a result, the promised leap never materialises.

The film gives out the message that sports are as much important for the growth of children as studies and that this should be inculcated right at the grassroots level. And thankfully, it’s all done in a playful, non-preachy manner. Kudos to Hansal Mehta for making another entertaining film. Let’s hope he continues to experiment with comedy as well.
