“Heaven on the docks man. This new coolie sucks, man”.
Rephrasing this only value add in dialogue if you discount those nonsense swears like Maa ka Ghosla and Juhu Scheme ki something, Coolie No 1, released on Amazon Prime on Christmas day, appears like an amateur spoof of the original.
Not that the 1995 blockbuster was a classic material on paper, Coolie No 1 was elevated significantly only by its lead actor Govinda who was in top form then. Here, Varun Dhawan ends up mimicking him in each and every scene reminding you of what great an actor Govinda is. Even the otherwise dependable Paresh Rawal falls woefully short of the legendary Kader Khan’s comic timing.
Sara Ali Khan appears lost throughout the film. The lady seriously needs to join an acting academy pronto in case she is still interested in her career. As for the supporting cast, they are so godamn bad that you really miss Kanchan, Harish and Mahesh Anand from the original.
David Dhawan has just indulged in a blatant copy paste job of his past success with zero upgrade in terms of creativity or technique. Farhad Samji’s dialogues are in rhyming couplets stooping to Kanti Shah’s notorious level. The sets are even more garish than the original.
As for that Mithun da mimicry, I’ve said it earlier in my Ludo (2020) review; repeating it again, let these naya bachchas achieve 10% of what the thrice National award winner Mithun Chakraborty did in his life before mocking him like this. Pathetic!!
Coolie No 1 is a bad – very bad – remake of the original. It is also a highly forgettable fare. Bhooli no 1, then!!!
