Indoo Ki Jawani features Kiara Advani as a Indira Gupta aka Indoo, a fiesty girl from Ghaziabad who is on a quest for love. On her best friend Sonal’s (Mallika Dua) insistence, our heroine joins a dating app named Dinder. However, Indoo’s wrong swipe on the app leads to the entry of Aditya Seal’s character. Things take a hilarious turn when she mistakens him for a Pakistani terrorist and what follows next is madcap fun.

Logic is often scarified at the altar of comedy and entertainment, but the problem with writer-director Abir Sengupta’s story is that it’s highly preposterous and profoundly silly. Just like Indoo’s character that cannot decide whether she wants to be the badass and have all the fun or worry about ‘log kya kahenge’, the film’s narrative also seems confused. From full-on Pakistan-bashing to half-hearted jingoism and from preaching about not judging a book by its cover to saying that all Indians are highly judgmental, ‘Indoo Ki Jawani’ tries to go everywhere and reaches nowhere.
Indoo Ki Jawani does not, however, sufficiently build upon these ideas. It is too focused on mining laughs from the girl’s awkward attempts to lose her virginity. The film strives not to allow the heroine’s agency to be reduced to a joke and makes a afir bit of headway. But overall there is more drudgery than drollery on offer.
Kiara Advani tries to spice things up and Aditya Seal does his bit to shore up the flimsy affair but to no avail. Indoo Ki Jawani is steadfastly unamusing because the heroine’s youthful exuberance is never allowed to rise above the juvenile.
Overall, Indoo Ki Jawani is very much watchable for the stunning Kiara Advani, amazing supporting cast and some fun moments. Though don’t watch it with high expectations!

It’s not the kind of film where you end up rooting for days, but while you watch it, it’s quite engaging.
