Story of the 2021 comedy – drama movie Moxie based on , “Inspired by her mom’s rebellious past and a confident new friend, a shy 16-year-old publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school.”
This is a film that pulls off the difficult balancing act of carrying an important and uplifting message while delivering consistent laughs and introducing us to some wonderfully badass teens.
Yet for all its energy and charm, this overlong film contains its share of undermining missteps. Topping the list are the weak portrayals of the story’s few adults, most notably Rockford High’s Principal Shelly (a misused Marcia Gay Harden), who is so clueless and absurdly dismissive she makes Eve Arden’s Principal McGee from “Grease” look like Gloria Steinem.
Moxie acknowledges all of that, far too late, during a climactic sequence that puts some of those stories front and center. Keeping with the movie’s restricted narrative focus and hesitance to really dive into the deeper water of politics, that scene ends as soon as Vivian’s multiple victories are established.
The result is a film that is more interesting in its approach -which has little in novelty- than in its execution. Poehler, a fierce comedian, deserved a better script. [Full Review in Spanish]
The film becomes a slightly convoluted exploration of the value of learning to let the bad stuff go and appreciate the precious moments we have with one another, which is a good theme to explore, but the characters are a little thinly conceived to really make it hit home. Nevertheless, Miller does a lot with what she has and ensures the film never tips its hand about what’s really going on until Miele is ready to do so.
The film is intensely, almost radically humourless, which is hard to ignore and in fact hard to bear, because of this film’s obvious resemblance to recent great movies like Booksmart or Lady Bird and particularly at times the hard-edged classic Election. In fact, Moxie feels like someone has put those films through a machine for extracting the comedy and the political satire. The movie tackles diversity, bullying and rape, but does it all very glibly. The target audience will surely be aware of the canon of superior, funny movies – and they will be baffled to see that Poehler doesn’t want to do something similar.
