Cunning and ambitious, our young hero jockeys his way into becoming a driver for Ashok (Rajkummar Rao) and Pinky (Priyanka Chopra-Jonas), who have just returned from America. Society has trained Balram to be one thing — a servant — so he makes himself indispensable to his rich masters. But after a night of betrayal, he realizes the corrupt lengths they will go to trap him and save themselves. On the verge of losing everything, Balram rebels against a rigged and unequal system to rise up and become a new kind of master.“

The White Tiger has an icy-cool, slick visual style and an unsubtle but effective running commentary about social warfare.
For its letdowns, The White Tiger offers its writer-director an encouragingly big canvas, which is heartening for an artist whose early work managed to take an inch and run a mile, proving all the more evocative for being so streetwise and constrained.
We know right at the start of the film, like we did in the book, that Balram Halwai has flown the coop. How he does it constitutes The White Tiger. Bahrani packs just enough into the tale in filmic terms for it not to seem drearily familiar.
The Great Indian Rooster Coop and Balram Halwai deserve better than this occasionally satisfying but largely pallid, superficial Hollywood adaptation.
In a film of this stature, where the writing is taut and the dialogues memorable, rendering a witty
conclusion is a humongous task. But we try. The closing shot shows a boastful Balram breaking the
fourth wall and with those piercing, rage-filled eyes, tells us, “I’ve switched sides. I have broken
away from the coop.” The smirk and that air of arrogance are self-explanatory – no, Balram is not a
good man anymore, just rich!
Fuelled by a punchy hip-hop soundtrack and a frenetic energy, The White Tiger is a creepy chronicle of a newly globalised nation struggling, like Balram, with an inbuilt inferiority complex. We keep telling ourselves that we’re tigers, but really, we’re just tigers that’re chasing their own tails.
